Я - христианка, верующая, крещенная в православии, но широкого профиля. Мне близок и протестантизм, и католицизм, но принадлежу я к апостольской церкви - это остаток карловчан, катакомбная церковь, которая не пошла на примирение с Путиным. Мы принадлежим к украинской автокефальной церкви, той самой с которой Москва выясняет отношения. Наш епископ - Игорь из Харькова, а мой духовный отец, глава общины - отец Яков Кротов, ученик Александра Меня, один из самых образованных теологов России, либерал, западник. Формально мы подчиняемся митрополиту Варфоломею. Мы не под Алексием II, а под Константинопольским патриархом. Признаться, я вообще не бываю в церкви - только на Пасху и Рождество, и вообще я не очень практикующая, но вполне христианка.

хтось може підтвердити, що вона справді щось спільного має з УАПЦ? якщо ні, то це можна потенційно розцінювати як репліку з метою дискредитації УАПЦ. чи УАПЦ щось про ці заяви знає? (звичайно, розумію, що УАПЦ загалом піклується про інші речі, але це з серії "імідж Церкви складається з іміджу людей, які голосно кажуть про їхню належність до Церкви"). про "не очень практикующая, но вполне христианка" я краще промовчу, аби не матюкатися. яка, млін, локшина на вуха тих, хто не тямить в базових доктринах.

As always, a brief: a Russian liberal "pro-Western" politician in her interview to BBC-Russian Service makes remarks which are either ridiculous (from the viewpoint of basic Christian doctrine, one cannot be "a Christian who doesn't practice his/her Christianity"), or an attempt to portray one of Ukrainian Orthodox Churches in an extremely negative light (which AFAIK doesn't apply in their case).

Someone please explain to me how a black teach calling black students "lazy & slow" is racist.

Батьки кількох чорних школярів подали до суду, звинувачуючи в дискримінації та кажучи, що їхніх дітей обзивали расистськими образами та карали суворіше, ніж білих школярів, у школі Монровілля(про пишуть, бо це місто - батьківщина одного письменника, який написав книжку про взаємини рас у США у 1930-ті роки). Єйтс сказала, що з того часу, як її син почав відвідувати цю школу у 6-му класі, його самооцінка знизилася. Єйтс сказала, що вона попрохала дозволу відвідувати школу з сином, після того, як у нього почалися проблеми, і коли вона побачила, як вчитель-негр казав учням, що вони "ліниві та повільні".

Поясніть мені хтось, як ця фраза з вуст негра, сказана учням-неграм, може бути расистською. Добре, можна не пояснювати, це було риторичне запитання. Хто має клепку в голові, зробить належні висновки (тіпа, "і ці люди забороняють мені ковирятися у носі!").

підтримую і собі цю акцію й іншим раджу. тільки не визначив, чи краще, щоб люди голосували за татар чи за українців? одне покаже неетнічність нац.героїв, друге - те, що Росію будували українці.

Par. 6 of Art. 7 of Part II of the Law of Ukraine #3551-12 "On status of war veterans [and] guarantees of their social protection"

"...servicemen, persons who volunteered to serve, as well as former fighters of mopping-up batallions, platoons, and detachments for population protection, and other persons who were directly engaged in military efforts to eliminate diversion and terrorist groups and other illegal formations on the territory of the former [Soviet Union] and who became invalids due to being wounded, shell shock, or being crippled while performing their service duties in these batallions, platoons, and detachments from 22 June 1941 until 31 December 1954..." 

Mopping-up batallions usually consisted of NKVD (later known as some of KGB's divisions) troops.
Illegal formations refers to those who continued to fight against Stalin's Communist regime, in particular for independence of their countries, e.g. in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine.
Notice that the resistance continued until the end of 1954. That's not a typo, it's NOT end of 1945, it's NINE years later. For some people there was not much difference between Hitler and Stalin. Both meant death to a lot of representatives of these nations. Those who already knew what Stalin's regime is capable of, initially would welcome the Nazi Germany troops as liberators from the Communist hell, but after the Nazis started persecuting those who wanted independence of the countries mentioned, the popular sentiment changed and resistance fought both the Soviets and the Nazis.

The colors of the barbed wire are those of the so-called St. George's Cross, a Russian Imperial order later adopted by the Soviet Army. It is now used as symbol of "Soviet heroism" in the World War II and for some serves as a visible representation of pride is one's Russian/Soviet history. However, it should be noted that the pride is at least somewhat misplaced: the USSR lost 7 soldiers per each Nazi soldier, in part because shortly before the WWII Stalin ordered execution of a lot of commanding officers of the Soviet military suspecting that they're plotting against him (does anyone see the similarity with Hitler?). The Soviet Union won the war by means of enormous human sacrifices. Not necessarily something to be proud of... Those who resisted and their families were executed or exiled to Siberia. The whole Crimean Tatar nation (the autochtonous population of the Crimea peninsula in Ukraine) was pronounced traitors and Hitler collaborators, rounded in the middle of the night throughout multiple towns, loaded into cattle railroad cars and exiled to the Central Asia areas of the USSR which resulted in huge losses to the Crimean Tatar nation (since then Ukraine encouraged their return).

       Всеукраїнська молодіжна організація Спілка Української Молоді в Україні, у рамках відзначення 75-их роковин Голодомору, ініціює проведення акції „Сопричастя” на знак духовної єдності з тими поколіннями українців, які постраждали в часи Великого Голоду та терору.

      Вважаємо, що серед низки меморіальних заходів, які супроводжуватимуть цей сумний ювілей, важливо не загубити пам’ять про саму людину, що стала жертвою тієї неоголошеної війни.

      Нерідко ми згадуємо про сам факт голоду 1932-1933 років, про його призвідників, але не в стані осягнути жаху, перед яким лице-в-лице опинився пересічний українець, з хати якого вимели останню зернину, село якого оточене кільцем вартових, діти якого просять їсти...

      Аби зрозуміти – потрібно пережити, або, принаймні, спробувати це зробити.
      Саме це є одним з завдань акції «Сопричастя», покликаної вшанувати пам’ять жертв Голодомору шляхом посту, молитви та доброї справи.

                                                          ПІСТ
      Кожен, хто погодився взяти участь в цій акції, бере на себе добровільне зобов’язання суворого посту, без вживання страви, впродовж 33 годин (з 7:00 год. 23 листопада 2007 року до 16:00 год. 24 листопада 2007 року). Це буде своєрідною особистою жертвою кожного з нас на помин душі невинно загиблих від голоду 33 року. Дуже важливо аби ця жертва була свідомою, а не механічною.
До участі в цьому заході запрошуються виключно особи, які досягли 18-ти річного віку і не мають медичних протипоказань щодо такого добровільного голодування.

                                                        МОЛИТВА
      О 16 годині, 24 листопада 2007р., учасники акції духовно єднаються в спільній молитві за упокій душі невинно вбитих та померлих від голоду.

                                                     ДОБРЕ ДІЛО
      Впродовж 33 годин участі в акції кожен її учасник може зробити добре діло, метою якого є допомога ближньому, який перебуває у потребі. Це може бути милостиня, пожертва на сиротинець тощо. Кожен вправі самостійно вибирати, яке добре діло він може зробити і куди його спрямувати.

      Зазначимо, що вперше така акція, започаткована СУМ’івцями Австралії та членами Тернопільської міської організації Спілки Української Молоді в Україні, відбулася у 2003 році.
      З того часу СУМ’івці щороку, в листопаді, проводять такий захід, присвячений вшануванню пам’яті жертв Голодомору.
      У 2006 році до участі в „Сопричасті” долучилися не лише громадяни України, але й представники Грузії, Великої Британії, Словаччини. Акцію підтримав доктор філологічних наук, багаторічний завідувач Науково-дослідного відділу україністики Університету ім. Шафарика у Пряшеві (Словаччина) професор Микола Мушинка, інші громадські діячі.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - One was a Somali refugee, the other an Argentine investment banker. Both are now high-profile Dutch women challenging this country to rethink its national identity.

Princess Maxima, the Argentine-born wife of Crown Prince Willem Alexander, triggered a round of national soul-searching with a speech last month about what exactly it means to be Dutch in an age of mass migration.

"The Netherlands is too complex to sum up in one cliche," she said. "A typical Dutch person doesn't exist."

Her comments have tapped into an unsettled feeling among many Dutch who fear traditional values have been eroded in a country roiled by a rise in Muslim extremism. It's a view espoused by Somali-born Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who has turned her back on her Islamic roots.

Conservatives in this nation of 16 million say the long Dutch tradition of welcoming immigrants and putting little or no pressure on them to integrate undermines Western values.

"Unfortunately, the debate about Dutch identity is too often held at a very trite and trivial level — as if the discussion is between Brussels sprouts and wooden shoes on the one hand, and couscous and caftans on the other," said Bart Jan Spruyt, founder of The Edmund Burke Foundation, a conservative think tank.

"What is really at stake, due to a frivolous immigration policies and decades of multicultural indifference, is the identity of the Dutch nation, Dutch history and culture as a part of the history of Western civilization."

Han van der Horst, author of a popular book on Dutch culture and history, staunchly defends the nation's live-and-let-live traditions. He points to an old Dutch saying that translates as "everybody is entitled to his own views," but hastens to add: "It doesn't mean you respect those views or share" them.

That attitude historically allowed rigidly separated groupings known as "pillars" to form in society, meaning people of different faiths or political persuasion had their own churches, schools, newspapers, television and radio broadcasters and labor unions.

The system began to unravel in the 1960s, but some observers see the rise of Islam as a new pillar in Dutch society — mosques are springing up around the country and Muslims have their own schools and Web sites.

Hirsi Ali, the former Somali refugee, is one of the success stories of Dutch immigration policy, but also one of its fiercest critics. She condemns the Dutch tradition of multiculturalism, saying tolerance for the intolerant has provided a dangerous breeding ground for Islamic radicalism.

Fear of such radicalism crystallized after the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, Hirsi Ali's collaborator on the controversial movie "Submission" — a fictional study of abused Muslim women with scenes of near-naked women with Quranic texts engraved on their flesh.

Van Gogh's assailant shot the filmmaker and slit his throat on an Amsterdam street, leaving a letter pinned to his chest threatening the life of Hirsi Ali, who wrote the film's screenplay. Despite going into hiding with 24-hour police protection, Hirsi Ali continued to speak out.

"Our migration policy is a failure," she told The Associated Press in an interview last year. "We used to pretend that we were a homogenous little country and that Holland is not a migration country. We have become a migration country like the United States."

After she arrived in the Netherlands as an asylum seeker fleeing an arranged marriage, Hirsi Ali quickly mastered the Dutch language, found a job and then went to university to earn a degree, eventually becoming a lawmaker for the conservative Liberal Party.

She moved to the United States last year to take a job with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington.

Since the Van Gogh slaying, the conservative government has reversed course on multiculturalism, passing a raft of laws that emphasize integration over cultural tolerance — most notably forcing foreigners to take citizenship courses and learn Dutch.

It's within that context that Princess Maxima's speech created such a stir, especially because the Dutch monarchy is not usually political.

Dutch lawmakers from all sides of the political spectrum also have weighed in. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende — one of three government ministers who approved the princess' speech before she delivered it — supported her views. Right-wing, anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders labeled it politically correct "tittle-tattle."

Mohammed Sini, the chairman of Islam and Citizenship, a national moderate Muslim organization, said there is a tendency in the Netherlands to group all Muslims together, bracketing moderates along with extremists.

He expressed hope that the old Dutch spirit of live-and-let-live would prevail.

"The key is respect — that you respect one another's values — that is a key Dutch trait and fortunately there are still many people here who carry on the Dutch culture in that way."

A protest meeting "No Prizes for Duranty" will take place on November 22, 2007 at 12:00 on European Plaza (in front of the Ukrainian House).

The event`s goal is to have the prestigious Pulitzer Prize removed from Walter Duranty, reporter for The New York Times, who received the prize in Moscow in 1932.

The protest meeting will call for The New York Times and the Pulitzer Prize Committee, which is formed under the aegis of Columbia University`s School of Journalism, to recall Duranty`s Pulitzer.

The event`s coordinator is Ivan Lozowy, a graduate of Columbia University in 1983. Contact telephone number: +380-66-544-1548.

2:09pm: 75 years ago, in 1932-33 Ukraine and other places in the former Soviet Union (some of which had largely Ukrainian population) suffered through a state-sponsored famine, masterminded by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The events known as the Holodomor claimed the lives of millions of victims and tried people's souls too - some, driven to insanity by hunger and death of entire families, resorted to cannibalism.

It's remembered among some Ukrinians (survivors and their children, some of whom now live outside of Ukraine (diaspora)), was denied by the Soviet regime (the official version was that it was all due to the forces of nature, "an act of God" as contracts have it sometimes, I was taught that version in school), and is now getting more known outside of Ukraine and our diaspora communities. Some still don't want to face it because of the... ahm... unpleasant, should I say, memories that it brings.

Now, it's a good idea to acquaint the world with a country and its history, but at times it seems like the Ukrainian government and some in the diaspora are overdoing it. We don't want to have an image of a country with constant problems because it's not really true. Yes, Holodomor happened, Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster happened, we fought every neighbor of ours to stay independent or to gain independence, lost on numerous occasions, had our language and culture banned, suffered greatly, and have a slew of really sad and depressing songs. But we have other stuff too. We seiged Constantinople and Moscow, kozaks (or cossacks) were the ones who built St.Petersburg (Peter the 1st, Russian tsar forced them too), first computer in Europe was built in Kyiv, and we kick ass in perseverence. And our food & beer rock. We won (together with Poland) the bid to host Euro-2012 soccer cup...
I'm fricking tired of some politicians trying to get some cash to hold exhibitons about Holodomor worldwide and forgetting that making an idol out of one single thing is a bad idea.

Розповсюджуйте, може, комусь стане у пригоді. Береш академвідпустку, їдеш у США, займаєшся якоюсь суспільною діяльністю протягом одного навчального року (поки вчишся), вертаєшся додому і робиш якийсь подібний проект. Не знаю, наскільки це можливо, але може якось можна зробити так, щоби ті предмети, які прослухані у США, якимсь-то чином були зараховані в українському ВНЗ.
Якщо хтось подасть і влізе в програму, було би цікаво поспілкуватися з цими людьми.


Call for Applications: Undergraduate Exchange Program

The Undergraduate Exchange Program (UEP) supports students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, and *Ukraine* in the United States for one year of non-degree academic studies.

Applicants must currently be enrolled as a second-year student at a university in their home country to be eligible. *Applicants from Ukraine must be studying in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya or Donetsk to be eligible.*

The program seeks to assist educational and civic development in Southeastern and Eastern Europe and Mongolia by exposing participants to a liberal-arts curriculum, different models of classroom instruction, community service work, and civil society-related programming. UEP combines the U.S. liberal arts academic experience with exposure to American social issues and civic development through involvement in community service-related work. The program aims to create lasting ties among participants and their American colleagues, thereby contributing to cultural understanding and tolerance.

Participants attend a university or college in the United States for one year. While in the United States, grantees agree to complete 25 hours per semester of community service work in an area of interest to them. At the end of the year, they are expected to return home to complete their degrees. Once back in their home country, grantees complete a community service project in their own community.
